Urgent tests: when test results indicate that immediate treatment is required, the doctor will ring to inform you and arrange the treatment.
Routine tests: most tests will fall into this category. Please ring the surgery 3-5 days after your test is done to find out the result. The best times to ring are between and . You will be asked to provide identifying information to ensure that confidential medical details are not disclosed to an unauthorised person you will be told whether the result is normal or not, and whether you need to make an appointment to discuss the result. In some cases where the result is nearly normal, the doctor will phone back after you have rung, to briefly discuss the result.
When minor abnormal results are found in routine tests, you will be informed of this when you ring. In some cases (e.g. high cholesterol or mild anaemia) a computer recall about 4 weeks later will be used to check whether you have rung for your results. If not, you will receive a letter or phone call asking you to make an appointment. Please phone to confirm that your test results are normal and that no further treatment is required.
Pap smear results are mailed to you. In addition, your results are routinely notified to the Victorian Cervical Cytology Registry - which provides a safety net to ensure women whose results are abnormal are followed up.
If you do not wish your details recorded at the Registry - please let the doctor know.
As a courtesy, we also advise women when repeat smears are due - this involves sending a letter to you after 1 or 2 years.
If you change your address, or if you prefer not to receive this reminder, please advise us.
